> TELETHUSA was a prestigious dancer from Gades (old Roman Cádiz). Writers such as Strabo (Strabonis), Estacio, Juvenal (Iuvenalis), Martial (Martialis), Petronius, Silius Italicus, Pliny the Elder (Plinius Secundus) or Apianius wrote about the dancers of Puellae Gaditanae famous dancers from Gades, one stood out: Telethusa.

Between the first and second century of our era, her dances amazed audiences. Martial (VI.71) wrote about her and said she was an expert in adopting sophisticated postures with her andalusian castanets and how she could dance to the rhymes of Cádiz.

That first reference of dance from south of the Iberian peninsula is considered in some studies the start of flamenco dancing, which along history, under the influences of a wide sort of diverse cultures, originated present flamenco.
